This is because it is believed that the Quran was sent down to the prophet Muhammad during the month of Ramadan. The timing of Ramadan was revealed to Muhammad by God during his first revelation -- when he was 40 years old. The first verses he received were: "Read! In the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clot. And your Lord is most bountiful, who taught by the pen, taught man what he did not know." (Quran 96:1-5)

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. The place of fasting is after Iman, Namaz and Zakat. Fasting in Arabic is called Sawm. Which literally means abstinence.

In Shari'ah terminology, Sawm is defined as abstaining from eating, drinking, sexual intercourse and acts that break the fast for the purpose of fasting from dawn to dusk.

Therefore, when the moon of Ramadan rises, it is obligatory on every healthy, adult man and woman to observe the full Ramadan fast. Allah says - O believers, fasting (Ramadan) has been made obligatory upon you. As was enjoined on those before you; So that you can become Muttaki.' (Surah Baqarah, verse: 183).

Prophet Kareem (PBUH) said - 'Whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and hope for reward, all his past sins will be forgiven. And whoever prays Ramadan i.e. Taraweeh in the hope of reward with faith, his previous sins will be forgiven. And the person who prays awake at night with faith in the hope of reward, his previous sins will also be forgiven. (Bukhari Sharif 1/255, Muslim Sharif 1/259, Meshkat Sharif 1/173).
